Category Three (h’cap 13-20) saw Neil McGuiness come second with an 89, two behind Dan Allen from Frome GC. Neil, however, won the Best Net over all three categories, with a 70, beating Dan by one shot.

Orchardleigh Seniors win Somerset Bowl against sister club Long Sutton!!
Orchardleigh Seniors are the champions of Somerset! In a well fought county final against Long Sutton GC, the Orchardleigh team won three of the five games and halved the other two, to produce a truly winning performance in securing The Somerset Bowl. Team Captain, Peter Forth dropped himself from the final game following a period of ill health, but the team did him proud on a wet and blustery day at Wells Golf Club.
Peter’s team includes Seniors Captain, John Cocks, partnered by Rod Jelly, and Club Captain, Malcolm Lloyd, partnered on this occasion by Guy Turner, as well as Club Manager, Pete Holloway, playing with Andy Smith, so the team was not short of experience, or opinions. Gordon Archer the lowest handicapper at 4, is new to Orchardleigh this year, but old stalwart Pete Jefferies proved to be the ideal partner, as they were unbeaten during the entire cup run. Pete’s brother, Phil, completed the team with last year’s Seniors Captain, John Scott.
The Somerset Bowl was presented by Keith Burkinshaw, the former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, and Tommy Tulk, the President of Somerset Golf Union. Both happen to be members of the runners-up club, Long Sutton, but it was a win-win situation for Orchardleigh owner, Graham Holloway, who happens to own Long Sutton as well.
Captains Charity Day 2015 - Press Release
Red, white and blue was the theme as Malcolm Lloyd, Captain at Orchardleigh Golf Club, ran his Charity Day last Saturday in aid of Frome Lions Club. With only a few moments of rain towards the end of the day, the one hundred and forty players enjoyed warm, sunny conditions (unlike the downpours the day before or the day after) and two shotgun starts at 9 am and 2 pm meant that play was (relatively) speedy. The morning saw Adrian Brewer, Jonathan Ward, Matt Gaisford and Tony Birch win with 121 points, five points ahead of Gordon Archer and the three Alans – Brown, Falconer and Barr – on 116.
The afternoon saw even better scoring with the father and son combinations of Paul and Kalen Marsh with Stan and Mark Ford coming in with a tremendous 129 points, nine clear of another team of youngsters, Jordan Hill, Josh Marsh, Ross Toten and Nathan Matthews with 118. The Marsh/Ford team, with the best score overall were presented with the Famous Grouse Trophy by the Captain.
Apart from the team scores there were also individual prizes on ten holes, from straightest and longest drives to nearest the pins. There was also the opportunity to “Beat the Pro” (with Assistant Pro, Dan Dredge, and Captain, Malcolm Lloyd standing in for Club Pro, Stuart Clarke who was injured) in exchange for stableford points on the Par 3 seventeenth, and the starter, Pete Dicken, challenged all comers to a straightest drive on the first – standing on one leg! Ian O’Connor was the clear winner, his one legged drive being considerably better than his effort on both feet.
Twenty members of Orchardleigh sponsored the prize holes, and together with the activities on the day, an auction at lunch and in the evening, plus the sale of four-ball vouchers at over twenty clubs, some £5,000 was raised for Frome Lions Club, who are supporting Dorothy House, The Blood Bikes and local groups within Frome. Lions member, Keith McLeod, was grateful to Malcolm and the Orchardleigh members. “This was an enjoyable day and a great way to raise funds. The club and the members were very generous, and I look forward to seeing how much is raised throughout the year. It was certainly a fine effort today,” said Mr McLeod.
