A Team Vs Burnham & Berrow Sunday 13th May

Firstly congratulations to Simon Barnes and the B Team for a fantastic result against Burnham B, it’s amazing to see the team spirit across both squads and having our illustrious leader Neil McGuiness walking (well in a buggy) the course and providing his support was fantastic.

This was always going to be our hardest game of the season, even more so given the windy conditions on the day, however as with our last game the plan was to try and win at least 2 games to get some decent away points, unfortunately this was not to be and the result was 4-1 to Burnham A, so in the end we only managed to walk away with a hard fought 3 points.

Congratulation to both Simon Addison & Paul Lewis for back to back wins, although we didn’t get the team results we wanted it’s time to put that game behind us and look forward to the next match away @ Long Sutton on 26th May, figures crossed the weather conditions will be more in our favour and we can get some points back.

Regards
Alex

B Team Vs Burnham & Berrow Sunday 13th May

After last weeks first win of the season, confidence was high travelling to Burnham and Berrow, on what was a typical day for links golf, bright sunshine and strong winds!

The match didn’t start well. Despite being up early, Gary Jefferies and Paul Cornish lost 4 & 3, but we were soon level after Matt Gaisford and Simon Barnes won a hard fought match, which swung 1 up and 1 down through out. Dan Duncan and Andy Gattiker continued their unbeaten run, with a heroic comeback. They were 2 down with 2 to play, playing 2 difficult finishing holes. Andy hit a superb tee shot to a few feet on 17 and then sunk another long putt to win 18. Michael Chu and Dan Sandquest also unbeaten, then held on to win, with Dan sinking a tricky putt to win 1up. Finally Trevor Atkinson and Chris Roach lost another tight match 2 & 1. So the match was halved, meaning we picked up 9 points to their 6.

It was a great day. The match was played in a great spirit and I look forward to our return match in a few weeks.

Big thanks to Neil, our Captain for travelling down and giving his support

Somerset Bowl Vs Isle Of Wedmore at Wells GC Sunday 6th May Match Report

Sunday 6th May Somerset Bowl At Wells V Isle Of Wedmore

Gorgeous weather greeted Orchardleigh and Isle Of Wedmore At Wells Golf Club on Sunday 6th May, as we played against each other in the 1st Round Of The Somerset Bowl.

Simon Barnes & Captain Gary Jefferies started us off, and although their match went all the way to the 18th, they unfortunately lost 1 down.

Neil McGuinness and Chris O Brien were next off, and quickly made it 1-1, and luckily we didn’t  get to the “3 up with 4 to play stage”, as they romped home 5 and 4.

James Rutt & Paul Carmichael followed, and considering they had combined 25 years experience playing at Wells as members in the past, surely a win beckoned? Not this time I’m afraid, as they lost 2 and 1, the biggest loss of the day. We might have to chip in and buy Paul a course planner next time we play at Wells, to ensure on hole 15 he goes for the correct flag ha ha.

Now losing 2-1, we needed to win both remaining games to win the match. Rick Wright & Pete Foote were next up and their match went to the 18th 1 up, and managed to secure a 2 up win.

So the match was to be decided by our last pair Gary Quin & Bryn Withers, their match also went to 18, but unfortunately lost 1 down, resulting in a 3-2 loss to Orchardleigh, as Isle Of Wedmore Wedmore progressed to the next round.

B Team Match Report Home To Weston Super Mare A Saturday 5th May

After last Saturdays narrow defeat, it was good to have a match so quickly to put things right, at home, to Weston A. It was a long afternoon in bright sunshine, so stamina and patience was the order of the day.

The new pairing of Dan Sandquest and Michael Chu dovetailed really well and won 3 & 2 and look a solid pairing. Simon Barnes and Bruce McGurk lost narrowly 2 & 1, and despite a great up and down for a 4 on 18, Trevor Atkinson and Sean Mcguiness lost by 1 hole.

So the result came down to last weeks, returning winning pairs, Gary Jefferies and Paul Cornish, and Dan Duncan and Andy Gattiker. Gary Jefferies and Paul Cornish continued their good form and won 3 & 1. And with a crowd gathering on 18, Dan Duncan missed his putt to win the match, but thankfully Andy Gattiker canned a tricky 8 footer to half the hole and win the match 1 up.

So, it felt good to get our first win under our belts, and we can feel confident going into our next match, away to Burnham andBerrow on Sunday 13th May

Regards

Simon

A Team Match Report Away To Cricket St Thomas Sunday 6th May

Good solid golf today gentlemen, although we lost 3-2 that’s a decent away result as we get 6 points and they get 8, a few more away results like that over the season and we will be in a good league position.

Congratulations to Simon/Paul & Phil/Darren for winning their games, commiserations to the losing pairs however all games went down to the last few holes so over all a positive performance all round.

I now have a tough decision to make for next weeks team selection but will look to send the update team list out sometime tomorrow.

Thanks again guys, let’s keep the momentum going.

Avalon A vs Long Sutton & Avalon B vs Vivary Park Match reports 22.04.18

by Office

on Mon April 23, 2018

Saturday saw both our Avalon A & B teams starting their 2018 season at home.

A Team vs Long Sutton, Captain Alex Frasers Match Report:

Great start to the season gentlemen, congratulations on the 3.5-1.5 win, resulting in 9pts - 4.5pts win. Congratulations to the winning Pairs of Neil Jelly / Simon Curtis, Matt Bullis / Liam Litterick & Nick Lemon / Phil Piercy. Technically it should have been a 4-1 win, but unfortunately my putter went missing on 15 & 16, meaning myself and Jordan Andrews only got an honourable half.

Also commiserations to Simon Addison & Bryn Withers, who I believe had a tricky game against a suspect 12 handicapper. Congratulations aside this was the same result we had against Long Sutton at home last year, so our goal must be to try and improve our away record. With this in mind our next match will be on 6th May away at Cricket St Thomas, so please inform Alex Fraser of your availability.

Regards,

Alex

Neil McGuinness Club Captain added: “Great Result Alex & our A team, nothing less than expected from the solid squad you put out. It sounds like Alex Fraser might have to move to the reserve list if you start Choking over clutch putts.”

B Team vs Vivary Park, Captain Simon Barnes Match Report:

Saturday’s much anticipated first Avalon golf league match of the season against Vivary Park ended in a narrow defeat for the B Team.

The day started well with Simon Barnes & Bruce McGurk easily winning 7&5 in the reserve match, and then Gary Jefferies & Paul Cornish chalking up the teams first win of the season 3 & 2. A narrow defeat for Trevor Atkinson & Dan Sandquest was followed by another victory by Dan Duncan and Andrew Gattiker 2 & 1. Matt Gaisford and Sean McGuinness then lost 3 & 2, so all hopes were pinned on the last match with the scores now at 2-2.

Chris O’Brien & Dave Galvin were 3 up with 4 to play, sadly they lost after a controversial ruling on the 18th, but perhaps should have had the game won by then anyway.

So this resulted in a narrow home defeat by 2-3, resulting in a 4pts-11pts loss in our first match of the season, however the standard of golf was very high, and we will put it right in our next game. Big thanks to Dave & the greenkeeping team, the course was in great condition following months of rain & Vivary Park were very complimentary.

Regards,

Simon

Neil McGuinness Club Captain added: “Being 3 up with 4 to play, surely that’s impossible to lose from? Anyway a great day was had by all, unlucky B Team, better results will come in the away match I’m Sure.”
