Avalon A Team Match vs Farrington Park C Result
Avalon A Team vs. Farrington Park C – Sat 29th June 2013
The Avalon a Team welcomed Farrington Park C to Orchardleigh for our 5th match of the season. The match took place on a glorious sunny afternoon with a bit of a breeze and with the course and greens in excellent condition. It was almost like playing in summer!! After only managing a 3-2 home win two weeks ago we were keen to use our home advantage and continue our push for promotion. After a hearty Full English breakfast we made for the course facing the prospect of giving 36 shots away.
Paul Lewis and Leon Matthews led the team off and they soon knew they were in for a battle. Giving 6 shots to each of their opponents the visitors won the first 2 holes and despite a fight back on the last 6 holes the home pair were unable to overturn the early deficit, eventually going down 2&1. Matt Dredge and Paul Ashman were our second pair also facing the prospect of having to give shots away. The match was a tight affair with no more than 2 holes in it until late on, but experience on the back nine saw the home team extend their lead to shake hands with a 4&2 win on the 16th green. Alex Fraser and Neil Jelly took up their usual third place position, keen to get back to winning ways. Early skirmishes were tight but round the turn they extended their lead to go 3 up after 12. However the away team were in no mood to roll over and a fight back meant that the match was all square after 16. However Neil hit an excellent tee shot and the putt was conceded for birdie giving them a 1 hole lead going up the last and they secured the point by winning the 18th for a 2up victory. The fourth pair of Rob Edney and Joe Hearn went 1 down early after they both bogeyed the 1st but birdies on the 3rd, 5th & 7th saw the home team turn 2 up. Pars at 10, 11 and a birdie at 12 saw this lead stretched to 4 up after 12. However again the away team staged a comeback and after 14 holes the lead was back to 2. If not for Joe holing a quick downhill breaking putt on the 15th the lead could have only been 1 but it dropped and a par on 16 was enough to close the match out 3&2. The final match saw Ian Longhurst and debutant Simon Addison combine well in another tight match. They managed to gradually edge ahead by 3 holes midway through the back 9 and constant pressure from Ian and a great up and down on the 17th from Simon secured a 2&1 win. This made the final match result a good 4-1 win for Orchardleigh.
After a few pints and some sandwiches and chips on the patio in the Sun, Rob collected more fines for our end of the season tour with once again Leon heavily contributing for numerous misdemeanours which included arriving late and leaving early. Our next match is away at Mendip Spring on Saturday 13th July where we hope to make it 6 wins from 6 matches.

Avalon A Team vs Mendip Spring
Avalon A Team vs Mendip Spring – Sun 16th June 2013
The Avalon A Team returned to action after a 6 week break by welcoming Mendip Spring to Orchardleigh. There were one or two sore heads following Pete’s 60th Birthday Party the night before but a hearty breakfast and lots of coffee seemed to help. The promised heavy rain didn’t materialise and after a few damp holes waterproofs were confined to the bag for the rest of the round. The opening skirmishes were tight with holes being won by both teams and with the home team giving 39 shots away the matches were always going to be tight affairs.
Joe Hearn and Jordan Lawrence led the team off but were always up against a steady opposition pair giving shots away. After a heard fought match they went down 3&2. The second pair of Paul Lewis and Leon Matthews also had a very tight match with neither pair getting more than 1 hole ahead. After trailing by one hole walking down the 15th, a run of 3 winning holes in a row turned the match around and they recorded a well earned 2&1 victory. Alex Fraser and Neil Jelly were bidding to continue their unbeaten start to the season but were always facing an uphill battle after going down early on in the match. Having pulled back a 2 hole deficit walking down 15 the match was all square going down the 18th. However a good up and down from 100 yards for par by the Mendip Club Vice Captain sealed the win on the 18th. Next up for Orchardleigh were Rob Edney and Matt Dredge. The lead changed on each of the first 5 holes with the home team only emerging 1 up despite 3 birdies in the first 5 holes. Further birdies at the 7th, 12th and 13th and a couple of missed putts from the opposition saw the home pair move into a 5 hole lead, eventually shaking hands on the 15th green for 5&3 win. With the match poised at 2-2 the result rested with the final pairing of Ollie Worts and Ian Longhurst. Again the match was close with no more than 1 hole in it for most of the round. However the home teams experience told in the end and wins on holes 14, 15 and 16 saw them win 4&2. This made the final match result a hard fought 3-2 win for Orchardleigh. .
After a few pints and some sandwiches Leon collected more fines for our end of the season tour although the Captain did turn the tables and fined Leon heavily for numerous misdemeanours which included his phone going off during the Captains speech!! Our next match is again at home against Farrington Park on Saturday 29th June where we hope to continue our winning start to the season.

Stragglers Vs Mendip
The Stragglers suffered a narrow defeat at Mendip Golf Club on Tuesday 2nd May. Having to give away 40+ shots it was always going to be a tough ask, and with 2 matches being lost on the last green, a 3-2 loss was a a great effort by everyone. The after match meal was thoroughly enjoyed by all judging by the clean plates. Thanks again to all the players who took part.
