Seniors News

August 4th 2016

Gentlemen

Welcome to the fourth edition of the 2016 Seniors News, somewhat delayed but it has been a busy time.

The Seniors Championship has just concluded having this yearbeen run over two days and 36 holes. A very successful event

saw an entry of 44 players, including nine single figure handicaps. The overall gross winner was Paul Lewis for the

second consecutive year with a gross score of 151, with Rod Jelly second on 160 followed by Brian Brookes, Malcolm Lloyd

and Joe Hearn. The nett winner was Brian Brookes on 137 withPaul Lewis second on 141, followed by Ray Clarke, Pete

Maunder and Nick Wigzell. Congratulations to Paul and Brian

.

The Men's Club Championship was held in July with a strong Seniors representation. Played over 36 holes off white tees on

consecutive days the event produced a notable first round score of 75 ( nett 70 ) from Malcolm Lloyd. Unfortunately Malcolm

couldn't maintain that form in the second round, but still a terrific performance.

The friendly matches have produced mixed results but our form over the last two months has been much improved with our

record over nineteen games showing six wins, six draws and seven defeats, middle of the table stuff but we are invariably

giving shots. We recently beat Burnham at home, having held them to a draw at Burnham, to record a notable win against a

strong team. I am of course grateful to all those that contribute by regularly turning out for what are always most enjoyable

days and welcome any members who would like to represent the Club, just sign up on the notices posted on the Seniors board.

I would like to draw your attention to a few upcoming events.

The Captains Charity Day is being held on Saturday 20th August. The format will be a Bowmaker four ball with entry at

£25 per player, the amount being the same for all members, 5 and 7 day, and visitors. There will be a considerable number of

prizes and all proceeds, including the entry fee, will go to Dorothy House Hospice Care. I urge you to enter and support

this very worthwhile cause.

The Vets Vase Stableford will be held on Monday 15th August. The event is open to all Seniors with the Vets Vase being

contested by those aged 70 and over, ( includes you Terry! ).

The second Seniors Away Day is to be held on Thursday 15th September at Cumberwell Park, notices will be displayed

shortly.

On a sad note our colleague and popular Seniors member Mike Small passed away last week. Earlier this year Mike donated

the magnificent Beechcroft trophy to be presented annually to the nett winner of the Seniors Championship. Mike's funeral is

to be conducted by Colin Horn and will be held at Upton Lovell

on Wednesday 10th August at 2.30.

I also understand that former member Alf Edmundson passed away last week, at the time of writing I do not have funeral

details.

Finally, my thanks to the Management and staff at Orchardleigh   for the continued excellent presentation and condition of the

Course, which many of us believe has never been better.

With best wishes to you all,

Pete
