April 22 2016
Welcome to this second edition of Seniors News for 2016. The good news is that the Course is at last drying out and there is actually some run on the ball, hooray!! All credit to the green staff who have got the Course into remarkably good condition in such a short space of time, thanks guys.
The team matches are well underway with a current record of won one drawn three and lost one. We registered a very creditable draw at Burnham and Berrow, with the three lost matches all going down on the 18th. Other draws were at Cumberwell and at home to Long Sutton with the only defeat at Bristol and Clifton. Our sole victory was at home against Minchinhampton Old, with the team captained by Mel Thomas, ok I can hear all the comments!
We have upcoming games against Bowood, Yeovil and Wells, all away. We still need players for the Wells game on 5th May and I would be grateful for any names added to the sign up sheet currently displayed on the notice board.
Last Monday saw the first medal of the season. Winner in Division One with a net 69 was new member Mike Passingham, welcome and well done Mike. Division Two was won by the big hitting Keith McCleod with a net 70. Having played with Keith a few times recently this success is no surprise, great stuff Keith. Just a reminder that there is a roll up every Monday morning ( Tuesday when Bank Holiday ), everyone welcome, first tee 8.18 with registration closing at 9.00.
Looking ahead a few dates for your diary. Wednesday 18 May, Seniors against Orchardleigh Ladies, first tee 09.30, twenty players per side with prizes for best pair, individual and of course the trophy to the winning team. The match will be followed by a two course meal at £13 per head. Entries are filling up quickly, entry sheet is on the notice board.
Newport Golf Club is the venue for the first away day of the year on Thursday 16 th June. Eight players from Orchardleigh were lucky enough to play the Newport course in March, a terrific venue with a fine layout and greens as good as you will find. This is a no miss event and an entry sheet will shortly be displayed. A second away day will be held at Cumberwell Park on Thursday 15th September.
The Somerset Bowl team, champions in 2015, open their defence of the trophy at Stockwood Vale against Mendip Spring on 4th May. Good luck to Peter Forth and his team, could we do it a second successive year?
As most of you will be aware there has been a change of management at Orchardleigh and a warm welcome to Paul Deeprose, the new General Manager. Paul comes to us with a wealth of experience in the Golf Industry and is already making his mark on the running of club affairs. We wish Paul every success and we are very pleased that he has agreed to attend Seniors Committee meetings. The recent Committee meeting was attended by not only Paul but the Course owner Graham Holloway and his wife Felicity. We enjoyed an excellent exchange of views and I can only emphasise that we all have our part to play in making Orchardleigh Golf Club a successful and profitable organisation.
Other changes see the departure of Club Professional Stuart Clark to a similar position at Bath Golf Club and also Beth who has looked after the bar with a smile. We wish them both every good fortune in their new careers. Dan ( Dougie ) Dredge will take on the Club Professional duties under the watchful eye of Paul Deeprose. I'm sure many Seniors will benefit from Dannie's teaching.
Finally a plug for Golf News, a glossy monthly magazine full of news and interviews. My son Richard is Associate Publisher and complimentary copies are available at the Club.
With dry weather forecast I hope that you will all make the effort to attend roll ups, sign up for matches and join in with our friendly and good fun Seniors Section.
