Welcome to this third edition of Seniors News 2016. With the season in
full swing we are enjoying fine weather and the Course is looking in
good shape. The Seniors team has so far struggled to come to terms with
the 9/10 handicap allowance losing our last three games by only one
match but always giving shots to the other side, at Hamptworth this week
we were giving a net total of 90 shots and lost 2½ - 3½.
Better news with the Somerset Bowl team who won their first match and
now face the mighty Burnham and Berrow at Mendip Spring on 2nd
June, good luck to Peter and his team. Last week we played our annual
match against Orchardleigh Ladies with a total of 40 players taking part,
the Seniors won the match with Terry Ryan carried by Pat Pitt winning
the pairs competition. An enjoyable day was rounded off with an
excellent carvery meal, thanks to Di.
The winners of the May medal were Phil Mays in division one and new
member John Griffiths in division two. The Monday roll ups are being
well attended but there is always room for more. A date for your diary is
the White Tee qualifier on Monday 27th June, always a popular event to
give the back tees a go. Entry to the White Tee competition is mandatory
for Div one players, although Div two players can enter a separate yellow
tee competition should they wish. There will be a bacon roll up on the
day with bacon roll and coffee at sign in and a meal following the
competition, all for a fiver.
At the recent Committee meeting it was agreed to amend the qualification
to the annual Vets Vase, this year being held on Monday 15th August.
The event will be a Stableford competition for all with qualification to the
Vets Vase being limited to those players aged 70 or over on the day, there
will be no extra shots awarded as in previous years i.e. All 70 plus play
off their true handicap. Also at the meeting both the Competitions
Secretary (Robert Miller) and the Treasurer ( David Chalker ) announced
their intention to stand down at the end of this year. If you are interested
in applying for either of these positions please speak to any member of
The two Opens have been well subscribed but if you want to enter either
the Pairs on 21st June or the Bowmaker on 19th July please get in touch
with Phil Jefferies.
Finally, the first away day of the year is at Newport Golf Club on
Thursday 16th June . The sign up sheet is currently displayed on the
Seniors notice board along with the roll up subsidy and entries will close
on 6 June. A great day out is assured and I am trying to twist the
Treasurer's arm to subsidise the bridge toll, I mean nobody wants to pay
to enter Wales!!
Wishing you all good health and happy golfing,
