Avalon A V Cricket St Thomas (H) & Avalon B V Mendip Spring (H) Match Report

by Office

on Tue July 3, 2018

On Sunday 1st July  Our Avalon A & B Teams welcomed Cricket St Thomas & Mendip Spring to Orchardleigh in the Avalon League.

The match reports can be viewed below:

On Sunday we welcomed Crickets St Thomas to Orchardleigh, this was our 6th game of 10 and the first of three home games in a row, giving us a good chance to gain some points and close the gap on Burnham & Enmore, it was a close match in the end but thankfully we managed to win the game 3-2.

Congratulations to Liam Litterick & Jordan Andrews for winning their match 4-3, also to Rob Edney & Stan Ford for winning on the 18th with a fantastic pressure putt from Rob in front of the crowd.
Well done to Joe Hearn & Nick lemon for halving their match, very similar game to myself & Neil Jelly who also managed to scrap a half after being down for most of the game.
Commiserations to Simon Addison & Paul Lewis who have been rock solid all season, unfortunately this run was not to continue losing their game 2-1.

As always thanks to all the team for their efforts and to everyone at the club for your support, our next match will be Sunday 15th July @ Home against Enmore Park.

We welcomed Mendip Spring Golf Club to Orchardleigh on Sunday in very difficult conditions, where stamina, in the searing heat was needed!

All the matches were tight, with all but one going down the 18th. Trevor Atkinson and Andy Gattiker went out first and nearly pulled off an incredible comeback. Being 4 down with 5 play, they took their game down the 18th, but lost 1 down.

We were soon level with Chris O’Brien and Dave Galvin losing their ‘ chokers’ nickname, winning 2 & 1. And then ahead with Matt Gaisford and Simon Barnes winning the 18th to win 1 up.

The match was then all square when Mick Shipp and Paul Cornish, coming up the 18th all square, lost the hole to an opponent with a shot.

So with the match tied, again, all hopes rested on our undefeated pair of Michael Chu and Dan Sandquest. With the crowds gathering round the 18th green, the news that Michael made a hole in one on 17 reached us, putting them 1 up. However they couldn’t hang on to the win, drawing their game, so drawing the match

It was a great day. Mendip Spring really enjoyed the course and were very complimentary to Dave and his team. They also loved the BBQ afterwards, so a big thanks to Neil Mcguinness for sorting everything out.

Also, congratulations to Alex and the A team for winning their match. With the crowds watching on, Rob Edney stepped up and nailed his tricky 10 footer, despite everyone behind him thinking he’d missed!

Avalon A Vs Enmore (A) & Avalon B Vs Mendip (H) 17th June 2018 Match Report

by Office

on Wed June 20, 2018

Sunday 17th June saw both our Avalon Teams play, the A Team were away to Enmore & the B Team were home to Mendip, full match reports can be found below:

A Team Match Report

Spending the weekend watching the US Open from Shinnecock proved good preparation for the away trip to a firm and fast Enmore Park. There were few team changes from the strong showing at home to Burnham and Berrow last weekend; partly because the captain decided to try and rekindle his youth in Ibiza!

Having worked through his full repertoire of fats and thins on the range Jordan Andrews paired up with Liam Litterick to take on Enmore’s talisman, Taylor Stone who opened up on the first with a drive that confirmed his +3 hanidcap! They made good use of the shots and earned a two shot lead with three to play, Taylor then closed the round with three straight birdies and Orchardleigh earned a credible half curtesy of a 40 foot birdie putt on the last from Jordon.

Rob and Gary came up against a strong pairing and unfortunately lost 3&2, Neil Jelly and Si Curtis lost by a similar score with Enmore’s mix of low and high handicap pairings proving too much for both pairs.

Simon Addison and Paul Lewis were down early on in their match but Paul played some great golf round the front nine and Simon joined in with a birdie on 8 to ensure that the game was level at the turn. Inspired by the Edney Captain’s team talks from yesteryear they ground it out on the back nine, Simon sealing the match with a birdie on 17.

In the final game of the day James Rutt and Nick Lemon (although I understand mainly James!) played close game and despite pressuring the Enmore pair all the way, succumbed on the 17th.

Overall a 3.5 v 1.5 defeat is not a bad result and with 3 of the final 4 games at home Orchardleigh are well placed in the top half of the table to try and close the gap on Burnham and Berrow at the top of the table.

B Team Match report

We welcomed top of the table, unbeaten Mendip on Sunday in a much anticipated local derby.

Trevor Atkinson and Bruce Mcgurk got us off to a great start with a great victory in a tight match, and this was followed by another great win by Dan Duncan and Andy Gattiker, who revenged their only defeat of the season at Mendip.

So 2-0 up and momentum was quickly lost with a heavy loss for Mick Shipp and Gary (shank) Jefferies and a narrow loss for Simon Barnes and Chris O’Brien on the 18th.

With the scores tied at 2-2, both teams waited for the final pairing of Michael Chu and Dan Sandquest to come home. Being 1 up coming up the last, Michael Chu made a great up and down from the fairway bunker, to secure the win, meaning a great 3-2 win for the team. Michael and Dan remain unbeaten as a pair.

The match was played in great spirit and its good to share the ‘bragging rights’ with both results being 3-2 to the home sides.

Special thanks also to Gary Butler, who, with an hours noticed entertained 2 reserves from Mendip and it was good to have him as part of the team.

Thanks to Jordan and everyone else who helped with the day.
