Avalon B Vs Vivary Park (A) Saturday 8th September

on Mon September 10, 2018

Our final match of the season saw us make the difficult away trip to Vivary. With Vivary only needing 4 points to win the division and with our position comfortably mid table, the usual intensity was lacking on our part. That said we still picked up more points than any other away team at Vivary this season, losing 3 ½ and 1 ½.

Trevor Atkinson and Bruce McGurk went off first and got us off to the perfect start with a win in a tight match.

Matt Gaisford and Simon Barnes were next off and despite neither playing Vivary before, had a credible draw in a very tight match.

Unfortunately that’s where our good results ended.

Despite a late comeback, Dan Duncan and Sean McGuiness lost 3 @ 2, inflicting Dans only 2nd defeat of the season. This off a handicap of 3 and giving his opponents lots of shots. Well played mate.

The last 2 pairings of Gary Jefferies Dan Sandquest and Tom Smith Gary Butler both lost heavily 7 & 5 and 7 & 6 respectively.

Congratulations to Vivary on getting promotion. Obviously home advantage for them is huge on such a short, tight course.

So a steady season for the B team. We’ve avoided heavy losses, with our worst result 3 ½ - 1 ½ , but haven’t won heavily either, having a few 3-2 wins. This probably explains why we are sat slap bang mid table!

A Team vs Enmore Park (H) Sat 1st September 2018

For the last game of the 2018 season we welcomed Enmore Park to Orchardleigh, the weather was good and from our perspective we only needed to win one game to guarantee staying in division two next year, Enmore on the other hand had a chance to come top and gain promotion to division 1 if they could get a 4.5-0.5 away win.

First out was Matt Bullus (6) & Liam Litterick (7) who had to take on a 5 & +2 handicapper, thankfully even though going a couple holes down straight away they managed to turn this around and win the game 2up. Great performance guys and the game we needed in the bag.

Second out was Simon Curtis (7) & Bryn Withers (12) against two 5 handicappers and as usual they played slow and steady which seemed to frustrate their opponents, in the end it was a tight game and finished with a respectable halve, well played guys.

Third out was myself (6) & Neil Jelly (5) against a 7 & 1 handicapper, this was a close game for most of the round with generally only one hole in it, and in the end we too managed to finish with a halve, which seemed a fair result in the end.

Fourth out was our leading pair of season, Simon Addison (6) & Paul Lewis (6) who had to play two 3 handicappers and unusually didn’t go out in the first group as they have done all season, this was a very close match with a high number of birdies and in the end we just lost out and ended up losing this match 1 down. unlucky gents however you should be very proud of your performance this season.

Last out was Rob Edney (6) & Gary Quin (7) who were the only pair giving shots with their opponents playing off 8 & 12, however as with the last home match they won the game easily with a fantastic 5&4 win, outstanding guys.

It was extremely tight this year and even though we didn’t find ourselves at the top of the table we should all be very proud of our performance, I would like to thank all A & B team players, the club staff & our illustrious club captain for all your support this year, let’s celebrate another season in division 2 and see if we can kick on and content for promotion next year.

B Team V Isle of Wedmore (A) Sun 2nd September 2018

As we sit comfortably mid table, our penultimate match of the season saw us travel to Isle of Wedmore. We had a much changed team from the side that played Wedmore a couple of weeks ago, but still came away with a credible draw.

Matt Gaisford and Simon Barnes teed off first, playing against a ‘Bobby Jones’ from Wedmore. Off of a handicap of 15, he lived up to his famous counterpart , quickly racing into a 3 hole lead. But a great comeback saw the match all square after 16, but giving away shots on the 17th, made all the difference, losing 1 down.

Paul Cornish and Andy Gattiker were off next and despite being up early, lost heavily 5 & 4.

So not a great start, but Captain elect Gary Jefferies and Dan Sandquest continued their good form from Saturdays medal, and were up throughout, winning comfortably 4 & 3.

The match was soon level after a thumping win for Michael Chu and Tom Smith. Not much to say after a 6 & 5 win, except very well played.

Our final pairing of Captain Neil McGuiness and Gary Butler played very well in a tight match and it took a great up and down on 18, from one of their opponents, to win the last, and halve their match.

Isle of Wedmore made us feel very welcome and it looks like we shall be playing there twice next season, as their C team has won promotion from Division 7.

Also,a big congratulations to Alex and his A team, for a great result on Saturday, putting them comfortably mid table in Division 2.

We welcomed Isle of Wedmore B to Orchardleigh on Sunday for our final home match of the season.

Poor planning from the Captain, arranging the match the day after our Captains Charity Day, meant that the majority of the team were nursing sore heads and lacked the usual concentration and stamina!

This was quite evident in the first match with Captain elect Gary Jefferies! Despite the valiant effort of Steve Regler, they lost a tight match 2 @ 1.

No such problems for Dan Duncan and Andy Gattiker. They were up throughout and won comfortably 3 @ 1.

Trevor Atkinson and Sean Mcguiness were next off and despite being up early, Saturday caught up with them, and ran out of steam losing the 18th.

A similar pattern followed with Matt Gaisford and Simon Barnes. 3 up after 3, back to level, then ahead, energy running low, but hanging on somehow to win 17 with a 4, winning 2 & 1.

Finally Michael Chu and Tom Smith were spurned to an easy victory 6 & 4 , after a contentious ruling on 9. They didn’t let the issue affect them and used it to inspire them. Well done guys.

So a comfortable 3-2 home win. We are comfortably mid table and look forward to the return match at Wedmore in 2 weeks
