The match reports can be viewed below:

AVALON A

On Sunday we welcomed Crickets St Thomas to Orchardleigh, this was our 6th game of 10 and the first of three home games in a row, giving us a good chance to gain some points and close the gap on Burnham & Enmore, it was a close match in the end but thankfully we managed to win the game 3-2.

Congratulations to Liam Litterick & Jordan Andrews for winning their match 4-3, also to Rob Edney & Stan Ford for winning on the 18th with a fantastic pressure putt from Rob in front of the crowd.
Well done to Joe Hearn & Nick lemon for halving their match, very similar game to myself & Neil Jelly who also managed to scrap a half after being down for most of the game.
Commiserations to Simon Addison & Paul Lewis who have been rock solid all season, unfortunately this run was not to continue losing their game 2-1.

As always thanks to all the team for their efforts and to everyone at the club for your support, our next match will be Sunday 15th July @ Home against Enmore Park.

Regards

Alex

AVALON B

We welcomed Mendip Spring Golf Club to Orchardleigh on Sunday in very difficult conditions, where stamina, in the searing heat was needed!

All the matches were tight, with all but one going down the 18th. Trevor Atkinson and Andy Gattiker went out first and nearly pulled off an incredible comeback. Being 4 down with 5 play, they took their game down the 18th, but lost 1 down.

We were soon level with Chris O’Brien and Dave Galvin losing their ‘ chokers’ nickname, winning 2 & 1. And then ahead with Matt Gaisford and Simon Barnes winning the 18th to win 1 up.

The match was then all square when Mick Shipp and Paul Cornish, coming up the 18th all square, lost the hole to an opponent with a shot.

So with the match tied, again, all hopes rested on our undefeated pair of Michael Chu and Dan Sandquest. With the crowds gathering round the 18th green, the news that Michael made a hole in one on 17 reached us, putting them 1 up. However they couldn’t hang on to the win, drawing their game, so drawing the match

It was a great day. Mendip Spring really enjoyed the course and were very complimentary to Dave and his team. They also loved the BBQ afterwards, so a big thanks to Neil Mcguinness for sorting everything out.

Also, congratulations to Alex and the A team for winning their match. With the crowds watching on, Rob Edney stepped up and nailed his tricky 10 footer, despite everyone behind him thinking he’d missed!

Avalon A Vs Enmore (A) & Avalon B Vs Mendip (H) 17th June 2018 Match Report

by Office

on Wed June 20, 2018

Sunday 17th June saw both our Avalon Teams play, the A Team were away to Enmore & the B Team were home to Mendip, full match reports can be found below:

A Team Match Report

Spending the weekend watching the US Open from Shinnecock proved good preparation for the away trip to a firm and fast Enmore Park. There were few team changes from the strong showing at home to Burnham and Berrow last weekend; partly because the captain decided to try and rekindle his youth in Ibiza!

Having worked through his full repertoire of fats and thins on the range Jordan Andrews paired up with Liam Litterick to take on Enmore’s talisman, Taylor Stone who opened up on the first with a drive that confirmed his +3 hanidcap! They made good use of the shots and earned a two shot lead with three to play, Taylor then closed the round with three straight birdies and Orchardleigh earned a credible half curtesy of a 40 foot birdie putt on the last from Jordon.

Rob and Gary came up against a strong pairing and unfortunately lost 3&2, Neil Jelly and Si Curtis lost by a similar score with Enmore’s mix of low and high handicap pairings proving too much for both pairs.

Simon Addison and Paul Lewis were down early on in their match but Paul played some great golf round the front nine and Simon joined in with a birdie on 8 to ensure that the game was level at the turn. Inspired by the Edney Captain’s team talks from yesteryear they ground it out on the back nine, Simon sealing the match with a birdie on 17.

In the final game of the day James Rutt and Nick Lemon (although I understand mainly James!) played close game and despite pressuring the Enmore pair all the way, succumbed on the 17th.

Overall a 3.5 v 1.5 defeat is not a bad result and with 3 of the final 4 games at home Orchardleigh are well placed in the top half of the table to try and close the gap on Burnham and Berrow at the top of the table.

B Team Match report

We welcomed top of the table, unbeaten Mendip on Sunday in a much anticipated local derby.

Trevor Atkinson and Bruce Mcgurk got us off to a great start with a great victory in a tight match, and this was followed by another great win by Dan Duncan and Andy Gattiker, who revenged their only defeat of the season at Mendip.

So 2-0 up and momentum was quickly lost with a heavy loss for Mick Shipp and Gary (shank) Jefferies and a narrow loss for Simon Barnes and Chris O’Brien on the 18th.

With the scores tied at 2-2, both teams waited for the final pairing of Michael Chu and Dan Sandquest to come home. Being 1 up coming up the last, Michael Chu made a great up and down from the fairway bunker, to secure the win, meaning a great 3-2 win for the team. Michael and Dan remain unbeaten as a pair.

The match was played in great spirit and its good to share the ‘bragging rights’ with both results being 3-2 to the home sides.

Special thanks also to Gary Butler, who, with an hours noticed entertained 2 reserves from Mendip and it was good to have him as part of the team.

Thanks to Jordan and everyone else who helped with the day.

Avalon A & B Home To Burnham & Berrow Sunday 10th June Match Report

by Office

on Mon June 11, 2018

Avalon A Match Report

Firstly, on behalf of the A Team we would all like to say a big thanks to Neil & Jordan for all their efforts and support for both teams on Sunday, and to the club for allowing a BBQ which hopefully everyone would agree was a great success, even promoting comments from our Burnham opponents such as “why can’t we ever do something like this at Burnham, it’s such a good idea and great way to end the day”

Given the fantastic support for both teams this year, first off was two reserve games against the Orchardleigh B team, Gary Quin & Joe Hearn followed by Jordan Andrews & Nick Lemon, both pairs won their games and showed form for future matches.

First out was Matt Bullus & Liam Litterick, and although I believe they played well and had a close game, the difference in the end came down to the putting prowess of one of their opponents who apparently just didn’t miss a put all day, so unfortunately this game was lost 2&1.

Second out was Simon Addison & Paul Lewis who continued their strong start to the season with a fantastic 7&6 victory, this included an eagle on the 2nd from Simon and in the end their opponents just could not take it anymore and retired to the bar without finishing the full 18 holes, great work gentlemen.

Third out was myself & Neil Jelly (the dream team from previous years), and given that I made some last minute changes to the pairings (again sorry to Jordan) we just had to win this game, thankfully started with an impressive eagle on the first (if I do say so myself) and followed that with a sandy birdie on the second, this put our opponents on the back foot for most of the game and was sublimely finished off by Neil with a 30 foot birdie on the 14th to close out the game 5&4.

Forth out was Simon Curtis & Peter Foote, two steady heads that I was confident would frustrate their opponents into submission, and thankfully that is exactly what happened with a good strong 3&2 win, added congratulations to Peter on his first full game for the team, well played gents.

Last out was Rob (steady) Edney and our newest addition to the team Stan Ford, a pairing that would wrap up the match in style with Rob chipping in on 16th to win the game 3&2, congratulations to both but especially to Stan for his first team win, first of many I’m sure.

In the end the match finished with a 4-1 win which effectively cancels out the 4-1 loss we had at Burnham a few weeks ago, so all in all was a great performance and perfect why to continue our league campaign.

Thanks again to everyone for their support, our next match will be Sunday 17th June away to Enmore park, onwards & upwards.

B Team Match Report

On what was a glorious day, we welcomed Burnham and Berrow to Orchardleigh with a double header with the A team.

Firstly congratulations to Alex Fraser and his team for a 4-1 thumping of their opposition. A fantastic result.

Sadly the same cant be said about the B team after a 2-3 loss.

Gary Jefferies and Paul Cornish teed off first and managed to get a great half, being 3 down with 4 to play. Next up, Matt Gaisford and Simon Barnes lost for the first time this season 3 & 2, but Dan Duncan and Andy Gattiker reversed that result with a great win. Steve Regler and Phil Brocks were next up and unfortunately lost, so the team waited for Chris Roach and Sean Mcguiness. Being 1 up coming up 18, hopes were high, but with Sean going in the water and Chris going, what we thought was out of bounds, but actually wasn’t, lost the last, so drawing their match.

Need to say a big thankyou to our Captain Neil Mcguiness for arranging such a great day. The BBQ after the match was a great success, with everybody watching the players come in.
