Seniors News, Events and Results

Hi all, Still hot and sunny and enjoying those extra yards of run on the ball.  I think Dave Roberts and his team are doing a fantastic job keeping the course in good condition with the greens being the best around.  All 50 teams (yes 50) who played the Bowmaker Open yesterday couldn’t praise the course enough, especially the greens. 2 visiting teams scored 88 points and the best home team scored 86.  Modesty forbids me to tell you who that was.  Oh all right then it was me, Paul Ashman & Roy Howes.

Many thanks again to Pete Dicken & Derek White for their sterling work in getting everyone off on time and to Captain Neil for spotting on the 3rd for the whole field thus ensuring no queue on the Tee.  A huge thank-you to Loes &Michelle for persuading most of the Seniors to part with their pension for the Raffle which raised £730.  Thank-you to everyone who donated prizes.  A big thanks too for the Bar & Catering Staff for keeping everyone fed & watered.

Matches continue apace and we now played 15 and had 2 postponed.  Results are still mixed however we had our first away win at Cumberwell last week which was significant because Cumberwell had only lost 2 matches all season!  We have now won 6, halved 2 and lost 7.  51 players have now played this season.  August is very busy with matches against Bath (H), Hamptworth (A), Mendip (H), Long Sutton (A), Rushmore (H) and the rearranged Cumberwell (H).  Sheets are up on the board, please sign up for what you can.  I need match Captains for Hamptworth (A) on Mon 6th Aug and Long Sutton (A) on Tues 28 Aug.  Please let me know if you want to volunteer, I will do the initial admin.

Seniors Club Championships is only 2 weeks away, sign up sheet is on the noticeboard.  There are already over 50 entries!  The Club Championship is open to all Orchardleigh members over 55 however the Mike Small Cup (Overall Nett Day 1 & 2), John Scott (Best Nett Day 1) and Phil Jefferies Cup (Best Nett Day2) are only open to Senior Section Members.

Charity Day is Saturday 18 August.  With Neil in charge it is bound to be a great fun day that hopefully raises lots of funds for our Charities.  Entry forms are on the Website, there will be Senior Team prizes so lets have a number of teams entering (there is no additional green fee for 5 day members).  If you do not wish to play but can spare a couple of hours to help with organisation on the day please let me know.  It will be much appreciated.  There will be lots of emails & posters about!!

Finally some dates for your diary:

Wednesday 29 Aug – Seniors 9 Hole Qualifier Medal & lunch after.  Winner goes forward to represent Orchardleigh Seniors at County 9 Hole Comp at Burnham & Berrow in September.

Monday 17 September – Captain’s Cup – Coffee/Bacon Roll, 18 Hole Stableford Qualifier, 1 course lunch after.

Monday 24 Sept – Autumn Pairs, similar format to last weeks Pairs Cup.
Happy Golfing

Hi all, what a change in the course since the arrival of the sunnier weather.  Plenty of run on the ball if you hit the fairway, the rough may be short but it’s thick!!  Now we are well into the “Season” the course is busier, we are now over 500 members, the days of whizzing round the course in the mornings, especially at weekends, are over.  However you all will have seen the email from the club on slow play.  Please enjoy your rounds of golf and employ “Ready Golf”, don’t let the Seniors get the blame for slow play.

Our team is doing ok.  We are now won 3, drawn 2 and lost 3.  More importantly we have had 5 new players, all with higher handicaps, playing and enjoying the friendly banter, golf and social afterwards.  If you fancy joining in please add your name to the availability lists on the notice board.  The sheets for the 4 matches in June are up on the board.  The first is the return home game against Bristol & Clifton on Friday 1st June.

Also in June is my Awayday at Saltford on Tuesday 26 June with the first tee at 1100.  There will be coffee/bacon roll from 1000, 18 hole competition and 2 course meal afterwards.  Cost will be £35 per head.  Please put your name on the entry sheet on the notice board.  Buggies will be available but you will have to book direct with the Club.  Closing date will be Tues 19th so that I can book tee times and catering.

For those that have entered the Knock-out competitions a gentle reminder that preliminary and 1st round matches have to be completed by 15 June.  You will need a really good reason for Robert not to disqualify you if the match is not completed!!!

The entry list for the Pairs Cup is also on the notice board.  Unlike the Pairs Knock-out you pick your partner for this Cup and play 4BBB stableford on the day.

Both the Pairs and Bowmaker Seniors Opens are filling up.  In fact there are only a few early slots left for the Pairs on Tues 19 June.  If you wish to play in either get your entry in asap.

I have discussed the organisation of both Opens with Jordon and have offered our assistance.  We will need some volunteers to book in, act as starter, some spotters and some general help to make sure our visiting Seniors have a great day.  Jordon has agreed that all volunteers will receive complimentary food and drink throughout the day.  The club will organise all entries & tee times, check cards and arrange vouchers/prizes for presentation on the day.

Please let me know if you can help.  Thanks.

You will have seen the reminders to get your name on the board if you wish to play on Bank Holiday Monday 28th May.  Neil, Lorraine and myself will be making the draw this Thurs lunchtime so you have till then to add your name.  If you can’t get to the club, email me and I’ll add you to the list.

All for now and enjoy the Sunshine

David Chalker has stepped down from his role of Treasurer after many years of excellent service and his nominated replacement – John Griffiths – was agreed by the members present.

Seniors Match Results for Sept 2018.

by Office

on Wed September 13, 2017

Since our morale boosting win at Long Sutton,we have played 3 matches all at home.

Yeovil visited us on Wednesday 6th September and despite us giving them over 40 shots we recorded our best win of the season, by 6 matches to 0.

Our next visitors were Tidworth Garrison. Handicaps were much closer in this match but once again the team performed very well, recording a win by 4 -1/2 to 1-1/2.

Our third match this month was our final home match on 20th September. This time our opponents were Sherborne and Vice Captain Jim led the team to another fine victory by 5 matches to 1.

We have now won 10 of our last 12 matches and with one match left to play (Mendip Springs) I would like to thank everyone who has supported the team throughout the season.

Best wishes
